Things to See and Do
Starting from the Coromandel Town end, this very scenic road follows the Waiau River upstream through farmland, pine forest, and extensive areas of native forest. Once over the summit, (306 meters) the road meanders down beside the Mahakirau Stream to SH 25, near Whitianga.
Returning via SH 25 is a popular round trip offering a variety of attractions to explore. The 309 Road is 20 km long with a 14-km gravel middle section.
Travelling this road presents no problem if you drive steadily and stay well to the left around the corners.
It takes around 40 minutes to drive from Coromandel to Whitianga in normal conditions.
At 4.7 km Waiau Waterworks, a
fun place to laugh and play with family and friends! It features whimsical contraptions and interactive playthings, all worked by water. There is a huge clock, pedal powered pumps, waterwheels, hand-pumps, kinetic art, and lots more. All in a beautiful, peaceful four-acre park, with trees and gardens, lawns, ponds and fun ceramic sculptures. There is an extensive playground (for Kids up to the age of 80!)
with exciting flying foxes, water cannons, flying bikes and mouse wheel, as well as swimming holes in the river and picnic spots (free gas-fired BBQ's available). Also featured is the Wet your Whistle Cafe with award winning locally roasted coffee and delicious home made foods to be enjoyed in either indoor or outdoor settings. Within the cafe complex is a shop with ceramic sculptures and pottery. Waiau Waterworks is a novel place for an hour or two of unique entertainment. Open 9 am to 5pm daily year round, extended till dusk during daylight saving. Approved Qualmark venue.
At 4.8 km Castle Rock, the core of an old volcano that rises above the bush of the Coromandel Peninsula Ranges. On a clear day an amazing panoramic view awaits those who make the effort to climb to the summit.
To get there turn left just past Waiau Waterworks onto Castle Rock Road, cross the ford and drive 2 km up hill through the pine forest (presently being logged!) until you reach a sign posted clay track on your right. Park here and follow this track through the pines and then into the native forest. Some places can be a bit muddy after rain and the last few metres are a scramble up, holding onto rocks and bits of tree root to the top. The walk takes about _ hour up and _ hour down. No problems for any fit person with appropriate footwear and clothing. The road through the pine forest is rarely closed but if in doubt call Ernslaw One Ltd on 07 866 5710 for an access update.
Waiau Falls
At 7.3 km the Waiau Falls crash over a rock face to a pristine pool below, surrounded by a beautiful bush glade. An attractive spot where you can swim under the falls.
It's only a short walk to the Waiau Falls.
There are access tracks both upstream and down. Another place for a swim. Allow 1/4 of an hour plus.
Kauri Grove
At 7.9 km the Kauri Grove is a wonderful place to visit This spectacular group of Kauri trees features 13 massive
specimen and twin Kauri all viewed up lose and personal. The 10 minute easy walking track starts on the opposite side of the road to the car park. It takes you through lush forest to the Kauri trees via a gravel track.
At 10 km Egan Park provides a pleasant picnicking and swimming spot.
At 12 km 309 Honey produces the well-known Manuka Honey of the Coromandel region. |
